 How to use Qsymia

Because of the risk to an unborn baby, only doctors and pharmacies trained in a special distribution program (Qsymia REMS) should prescribe or dispense this medication. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for details.


Read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist before you start taking this medication and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.


Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once daily in the morning. Taking this medication late in the day may cause trouble sleeping (insomnia). Swallow the capsules whole. Do not crush or chew the capsules.

What is Qsymia?

Qsymia contains a combination of phentermine and topiramate in an extended-release capsule. Phentermine is an appetite suppressant similar to an amphetamine. Topiramate is typically used as a seizure medication, also called an anticonvulsant.


Qsymia is used together with diet and exercise to help some adults and children 12 years and older with obesity, or some overweight adults who also have weight-related medical problems such as diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure, to lose weight and keep the weight off.

Take Qsymia (phentermine / topiramate ER) in the morning. Taking it earlier in the day can help prevent insomnia (trouble falling and staying asleep), which is a common side effect.

If you're a woman of childbearing age, your provider might have you complete a pregnancy test before starting Qsymia (phentermine / topiramate ER) and monthly during treatment, as topiramate can harm your unborn baby. Also, talk with your provider about good birth control methods while taking Qsymia (phentermine / topiramate ER) because it can make certain birth control medications not work as well.
